Windows Software: CCleaner

Software to Optimize Windows

My three year old Windows XP laptop has been given new life. I'm referring to the amazing freeware program called CCLEANER v2.13. This cool tool *cleans up a lot of the gunk in Windows slowing down your computer. CCleaner is supposed to be compatible with Windows 98/NT4/ME/2000/XP/Vista (64-bit XP and Vista too). http://www.ccleaner.com/

* Before using this program, you MUST backup your registry. A new restore point wouldn't hurt either. You've been warned.
note: The screen shot above is from my desktop computer.

I did have to run the registry cleaner three times before it found and fixed all of the discovered registry problems. I also used the **"Windows and Application Cleaners" to clear out over a gigabyte of junk files. And I used the "Uninstall" program to clear out "junk" programs I installed but don't use (and there were many). After re-booting, I ran the registry cleaner again to remove more "junk" that Windows just couldn't seem to keep track of. I also used CCleaner on my desktop computer with similar results.

** Be aware that the "Windows Cleaner" will clean out your Web browsers history and cache, you'll have to re-enter site specific user names and passwords, hope you wrote them down.

Windows XP is now very satisfying to use. Really. My laptop seems spunkier and more responsive. With the performance gains I achieved, I decided to add two new utilities to my desktop - RocketDock and Yahoo Widgets.

Now how cool is that?
