The 404 has gone Podcast

From video to audio only...mild rant in process (still editing)

One of my favorite video streams, The 404 Show, from cnet.com has gone direct to podcast. They no longer stream video. How do I feel about that?

I was regularly watching the 404 Show on my iPad using the vodio app. My routine was to watch the 404 when I was prepping dinner. Not anymore. Now I listen to the 404 Show using TuneIn Radio.

They dropped their video show this year just after they moved into a newly remodeled studio. Long time host Jeff Bakalar said it was easier to produce the show by only recording audio.

Find the 404 Show

I'm adapting to only listening to my favorite technology show. I do miss seeing the faces of the host and the guests. Now I'll have to track down the videos and tech they talk about, because I can't see what they are talking about.

I do believe that audio podcasts will continue to proliferate. It's a matter of having the proper app for watching/listening (everyone is plugged in these days). I'm listening to a podcast as I compose this post. More and more people have left or are unsatisfied with "mainstream" media (TV/radio). Many of us are turning to online content and tailoring what we watch and listen to. Plus some of us are creating our own content to share (I co-host The Wine Muse podcast on Minstrel and Muse).

Streaming

I think that streaming music services should also factor into this topic. More and more people are using streaming services for listening to music: Sound Cloud, Songza, Pandora, Spotify.

Consequently, digital music purchases are declining while streaming for free is increasing. A side note, vinyl sales are up! Yes more records on vinyl are being sold each year. New vinyl pressing facilities are going up to meet demand. I have a newly purchased turntable myself. Slowly building up a new vinyl record collection.

Apps I Use

1. TuneIn Radio (ios, android, ROKU). For audio only.

2. Vodio (ios, android) For video shows.

3. iTunes (Windows Laptop) Use less and less for any content.

Convergence and Dreams Realized

Back in the 1990's when I was still actively working in the field of Information Technology, the topic of "Convergence" was often discussed. Convergence, the concept as related to the melding of technologies; computers, TV, radio, video, music, Internet, phones, news, etc...

We finally saw this concept realized in the early 2000's with smartphones and home computers that had enough capability to produce and display streaming audio and video recordings. Soon after podcast were born. None of this would have been possible without the continual advancement of computer technologies, shrinking CPU, increased performance, along with inexpensive high-speed Internet and cheap, plentiful cloud based storage. Back in the 90's we talked about and dreamed about the possibility that anyone and everyone could be their own TV station or radio station. Now we are.

Portable Audio - Internet of Things

With the emergence of portable mp3 players, the iPod in particular, audio Podcasts on the ever popular Internet of things emerged. About ten years ago I found myself subscribing to many different podcasts (after I figured out what they were). At first I downloaded them to my computer and played them at my desk. After I was given my first iPod (5th Gen) 8 years ago, I then began carrying around and playing them in my car and while I walked.

Today I mostly live stream podcasts and only download them if I know I won't have Internet access. Modern cellphones bundled with cheap/included high-speed Internet has negated the need to download content. Just stream what you want to listen to.

Content

There is a lot of available content to listen to or watch. Most of the Podcasts I listen to are not wine related. They are mostly technology and comedy related. Good background programs to stay current on Technology and current events, usually played while I am cooking, cleaning or writing.

What I listen to and watch

Decibal Wines Podcast by Daniel Brennan

One of the wine Podcasts I do listen to is by Daniel Brennan of Decibal Wines. I've met Daniel a couple of times at the Wine Bloggers Conferences. He's from Philadelphia and now lives in New Zealand where he makes very good wine.

Video Podcasts/Video Streams/You Tube Channels.

I find that I watch streaming video wine channels more often than the audio wine podcasts. So, I was surprised last month when my favorite streaming video Podcast, CNET 404 Show, announced they were no longer going to do video. They are switching to an audio only Podcast format. They also stated that they are going to extend the length of their show too. Their old video format was a program of about 45 minutes, by switching to an audio only Podcast, they expect shows to be about 2 hours long with more guests. Maybe they figured that it is the best format for them and part of a trend. Their explanation was unclear.

Here are links to a couple of Wine video shows I watch.

James the Wine Guy -

James is a friend and fellow wine blogger. He reviews many, many, many wines every week on video. We have similar palates. We interact via twitter wine tastings every month and via facebook.

My Wine Words -

Allie Merrick and her husband produce some very fun and sexy wine tasting videos. Some of their wine tasting videos they record in the bath tub! A lot of fun, genuine and you can see and hear their passion for each other and the wine they are tasting. Special, creative and inspiring. We engage via twitter and Facebook.

J'aime Ton Wine -

I stumbled over Lolita Seine and her French video wine reviews in 2013. My French is much neglected. I don't know what she's saying in her videos, but I love how she says it. She often combines wine tasting with music. We still engage via twitter and Facebook.

Not sure I answered the original question...went a bit off track.

I do love the spontaneity of recording our wine podcasts The Wine Muse. Each month I look forward to sharing with our listeners my experience with a bottle of wine. Especially when we are able to interview the winemaker and have them share their passion and intent. It helps to complete the picture and appreciation for that bottle. I hope we are helping to educate and inspire people to explore the world of wine. For me, it is no longer enough to drink a bottle of wine. I have to know who made the wine and I want to meet them or speak with them too.

I'm open to follow up questions.
